A poem by Ruth Baker
There used to be silence
When you were little.
I’d creep to your bedside
In the dead of night,
Avoiding the toys and
Other trip hazards.
I’d kiss your hot forehead
And smooth out your hair.
You had fallen asleep
Mid-effort to wait
For the time to tick by
And gifts to arrive.
My two boys are my gift,
But not only that.
God gave me the present
This moment in time,
And a power to love
That knows no restraint.
To love without boundary,
A gift and surprise.
To love so completely
With infinite grace.
And now they are older
The house is not still.
I fight to stay wakeful
To put out the gifts,
So come Christmas morning
They still feel delight
At bounteous presents
Piled under the tree.
Yet joy is still bristling
With eyes bright with glee.
And delight overflows,
Their hearts full and blithe.
God gave me the present,
This moment in time,
And loves me completely
With infinite grace.
My heart brims to fullness
For Jesus the King.
The baby, the saviour
Who gave us this love,
Our Lord and our treasure
Who loves beyond all.
